(the car i found has 100000 miles and has automatic gearbox (2013 model)).i would like to know more about the reliability and your advices.thank you.

The car felt sluggish, didn´t rev above 3500 and used TONS of diesel. Check/replace CDI pressure meter. Also a common problem, but this usually gives you a fault code. Hope it helps.. There ARE 2 diesels that where in the E46 320. One older 320D with 136 hp and one newer with CDI and E-vnt turbo that gives 150 hp.
The BMW might look luxurious and glamorous but it also has been notorious for engines that have not performed as expected. Different issues have been seen in the BMW engines like the timing chain problem. These issues have been prevalent in some variants of the BMW 320d 2.0 Diesel, 520D 2.0 Diesel and X5 330D 3.0 Diesel. Asked on 13 January 2013 by Mister_B. Answered by Honest John. The 'burning' smell might have been the diesel particulate filter trying to regenerate, but on this occasion it failed. Could be at the end of its life. Tags: diesel particulate filter technical issues cutting out engine.
